Jane Blackwell Author Farmer Clarty's Christmas

Here at Farm Toys Online, we absolutely love Farmer Clarty's Christmas. So we were thrilled to have the chance to meet up with author, Jane Blackwell, and put some questions to her.

The Farmer Clarty story begins on Christmas Eve when he is readying his tractor to deliver presents to all of the animals before they wake up on Christmas morning. Things don’t go to plan and the tractor ends up getting stuck in a lot of mud. There’s plenty of great pictures of Farmer Clarty’s haphazard adventure along the way, illustrated by Jake Tebbit who provided funny illustrations for Farmer’s Weekly for 20 years.

Here’s what Jane had to say…

What inspired Farmer Clarty?

When I was younger growing up on the farm I often used to wonder whether Father Christmas paid a visit to the animals out in the yard on Christmas Eve; forty years later I put my thoughts on paper and Farmer Clarty arrived!

Which five words best describe Farmer Clarty?

Jolly
Loveable
Funny
Kindly
and of course Clarty (Clarty = covered in mud)

Can you share a favourite line / paragraph from the book?

The cows and the sheep, the goats and the hens
Are hanging their stockings up next to their pens.
They curl up together and close their eyes tight
For to see Farmer Clarty just wouldn’t be right.

What has been the best reaction from a reader, so far?

My favourite review was from a mum of a 15 year old girl with learning difficulties who wrote to me and said how much joy Farmer Clarty had given to her daughter who was afraid of reading out loud and related to very few books. She said Farmer Clarty ticked all the boxes. This meant more to me than anything else written about Farmer Clarty.

What are your hopes and dreams for Farmer Clarty’s future?

I hope Farmer Clarty continues to put a smile on the faces of readers and listeners alike for many years to come, and maybe one day meet a Mrs Clarty who knows...

And finally, what do you wish Farmer Clarty would bring you this Christmas?

A magical coat that never gets wet and keeps me warm and dry when I’m out with the animals whatever the weather.
